My introduction to ADR began in a year-long course taught by renowned Professor Lela Love at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. That class included training in the skills required to be a neutral, as well as volunteer work as a mediator at Brooklyn Mediation Center. The course was an eye-opener. The skills I obtained have been invaluable in both my career and my personal life and have strongly influenced the way I treat disputes. While working as a private practice attorney from 1986 to 2001, I took advantage of varied opportunities to train as a mediator and an arbitrator. I served as a pro bono mediator for both New Bedford, MA and Lawrenceville, NJ. I also mediated a complex case for the fledgling AHLA Dispute Resolution Service. As well, I joined arbitration panels for AHLA, the AAA Commercial Panel and others. I arbitrated cases for AAA involving the break-up of physicians' group practices, among others, and arbitrated a complex case for AHLA involving a large Physicians' IPO and a national third party payer. In 2001, I joined the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety as a Deputy Attorney General. The major focus of my work as a DAG was to regulate and review the sales of hospital assets and other nonprofit corporations. From 2001 until I retired from the AG's office in 2021, I reviewed almost every nonprofit hospital sale that occurred in New Jersey. Although I continued to use the resolution skills and the win-win approach I had gained as an ADR practitioner in my work at the Division of Law, I was precluded from outside work as a neutral. Happily, in 2019 I was selected to work as a mediator for the NJ Division of Civil Rights resolving disputes brought under the Law Against Discrimination. I believe that my many years of experience as a neutral and my years of work as a health care attorney and a regulator of complex hospital and nursing sales for the AG's office makes me a prime candidate for selection as a neutral in health care related disputes.
